Internships are a proven way to gain relevant knowledge, skills, and experience while establishing important connections in the field. Internships are also a way to get your feet wet and find out if a specific field is something you could see yourself doing full-time. Internships may be completed during fall or spring semester or full time over the course of the summer. Leon County offers hands-on, resume building Internships in many areas: public administration, legislative work, community and media relations, human resources and many more.

Steps to interning with Leon County

  • Fill out an application
  • Attach your cover letter and resume to VolunteerLEON Application
  • After the semester application deadline your application will be sent to County divisions and Non-Profit Agency Partners you specified, where they will review the application. If your application is selected, you will be contacted for an interview by the supervisor in charge of interns.
  • Following the interview, you will hear back on whether you have been accepted and if chosen, you will be given information on an Internship orientation with Leon County Volunteer Services for important information related to completing a successful internship.
  • Upon completion of the orientation and related forms, you will work with the division or agency internship supervisor to set up a starting time and date and create a mutually agreed upon schedule.

Internship Program Process

Internship Program Application:  When possible submit an application online by clicking the Internship Application.

In the text fields, indicate your interested positions. In addition, to be contacted for an orientation, you MUST attach a resume' (titled with your First and Last Name-NOT RESUME) Preferably in Portable Document Format (PDF). If you do not, your application will not be considered.

  • Commitment Agreement: Fill out during or after orientation with your internship coordinator at VolunteerLEON.
  • Office Contact and Process You should expect to be contacted by the volunteer center to schedule an Internship Program Orientation within 5 to 7 business days after receiving confirmation that you  have been selected for an Internship position. It is important to notify the Volunteer Coordinator if you have not been contacted after 5 to 7 business days. Otherwise, the Volunteer Coordinator will not be aware that your status is still pending. It is also important to notify the Coordinator of your starting date once it has been determined.
  • Mid-Term Evaluation If you are selected as an intern, your internship should begin with the department you choose. Two weeks after you have begun, a Mid Term Evaluation should be completed.
  • Concluding Evaluation and Time Records Then two weeks before your internship is scheduled to end, the following forms must be completed.
  • Intern Exit Evaluation This form provides us with feedback on each County Department. This is designed to help us improve or recognize internship supervisors.
  • Intern Hour Report This should be filled out through the duration of your internship to provide accuracy.

Required for completion of Internship Program

Back Ground Check Release & Commitment Contract: These documents are filled out during orientation with the volunteer coordinator at Volunteer LEON or virtually.

Mid-Term Evaluation

If you are selected as an intern, your internship should begin with the department you choose. Two weeks after you have begun, a Mid Term Evaluation should be completed (electronic link will be provided at orientation when an internship is granted).

If there are problems the evaluation may be returned to the Volunteer Coordinator by fax to (850) 606-1970 or by mail to 301 S Monroe Street, Tallahassee, FL 32301.

Concluding Evaluation and Time Records

Two weeks before your internship is scheduled to end the Intern Exit Evaluation must be completed (link provided at orientation when an internship is granted). This evaluation provides us with feedback on each County Department. This is designed to help us improve and recognize internship supervisors. The Intern Hour Report should be filled out through the duration of your internship to provide accuracy.

If this information is not provided to the Volunteer Center, you have not completed the program and will not receive your certificate.

Goal Statement
