Position Overview:

Alzheimer's Project is currently recruiting AmeriCorps  members for the 2022-2023 service term, which starts on 9/1/2022 and ends on 8/31/2023. This specific AmeriCorps program is called Legacy Corps for Veterans and Military Families, and AmeriCorps members are needed to provide in-home companionship-based respite care (non-medical and non-personal care) for persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. AmeriCorps members serving in this capacity give caregivers of loved ones with dementia a much needed break. Members receive extensive training in dementia care, a monthly stipend, an education award to use for themselves (or if 55 years of age or older, pass down to your child, stepchild, grandchild, step-grandchild, or foster child), and student loan forbearance with paid interest.

Mission: Legacy Corps for Veterans and Military Families (LCVMF) is a project that provides caregiver support services for veterans and military families. LCVMF was developed to meet the need for alternative respite care strategies designed specifically for veteran and military caregivers. The goal in providing caregiver respite is to keep families in their communities longer, postponing or avoiding institutional care completely.

Position Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a representative of Alzheimer's Project, and the Legacy Corps for Veterans and Military Families Program, conducting oneself in a friendly and professional manner
  • Provide caregiver support services in an effort to promote health and independent living for Veteran and military family members
  • In-home companionship/respite activities include but are not limited to: conversations, reminiscing, playing cards/games, taking walks, light meal/snack prep, encouraging exercise. All activities are of a non-medical nature, not requiring the skills or services of medical, therapeutic or other licensed professionals. 
  • Comply with Alzheimer's Project and Legacy Corps program rules and regulations
  • Attend scheduled meetings and trainings 

 

Position Requirements:

This AmeriCorps program requires a 1-year commitment of 8-12 hours/week from volunteers, for a total of 450 hours of service throughout the year. Schedules are flexible (mornings/afternoons/evenings/weekends), but it is preferable to have some weekday availability and a few hours on the weekend to offer. Reliable transportation will be needed, as members drive themselves to and from the homes of the clients they are matched with.

 

Position Qualifications:

  • Must be 18+ and a US Citizen, National or Legal Resident
    1-year commitment to AmeriCorps with 450 hours of service (about 20% will be training hours)
  • Submit application online through AmeriCorps
  • Interview with AmeriCorps Program Manager at Alzheimer's Project
  • Must pass 2 background screenings + National Sex Offender History Check
  • Must have reliable transportation and proof of auto insurance 
  • Must have personal cell phone

 

Position Remuneration:

  • $155 Monthly Living Allowance
  • $1718.25 Education Award upon successful completion of year of service (450 hours of service). Award can be passed onto a child/grandchild if the participant is 55+
  • Loan Forbearance (with paid interest)

Our goal is to enable caregivers to sustain a decent quality life as they care for their loved one, and to provide a comfortable, dignified existence for people living with dementia. In many cases, our support helps caregivers keep their loved ones in the comfort of their own home.

Our Respite Programs help caregivers stay healthy while our Support Groups help them connect with other caregivers. We also deliver professional knowledge through seminars, training classes and peer support groups. All our services are provided at no cost to participants.
