Title:
Learning and Workforce Services Intern
Major Objectives:
Join a dynamic team this summer and gain hands-on experience in public librarianship while supporting innovative programs, community engagement, and public service initiatives at the Leon County Main Library. Under the direction of an Information Professional, the Library Intern assists with the planning and implementation of programs and special events throughout the summer. The intern will also support reference desk functions and general programming at the Leon County Main Library. The intern will gain experience serving patrons of all ages, with responsibilities shared between Youth and Adult Services. This position is designed to provide practical experience in programming, reference, collection support, outreach, and day-to-day public library operations.
Located at the LeRoy Collins Main Library, the Learning and Workforce Development area is composed of Print materials, Media materials, and Interlibrary Loan. The Learning and Workforce Development staff serves a diverse adult population, providing research services, technology assistance, programming, and reader’s advisory services.

Support Learning and Workforce Services operations at the library, including but not limited to the following: • Plan, prepare, and execute engaging events and activities aligned with the Summer Reading Program theme and goals for children and adults. • Provide prompt, courteous, and direct assistance to patrons with basic information regarding library materials, equipment, systems, and services. • Support reference desk functions in both Youth and Adult Services. • Reserve library materials and oversee program room technology reservations. • Support Information Professionals in selecting materials for both the Adult and Youth Services collections, including relevant print and digital resources that reflect the interests and needs of the community. • Plan and implement library programs and services that meet the diverse educational, recreational, and personal needs of patrons. • Assist with creating and disseminating promotional materials related to library services and programming, including book displays. • Maintain a community engagement mindset and develop effective working relationships with patrons and staff. • Provide reader’s advisory services for youth and adults. • Assist patrons with technology, digital resources, and basic troubleshooting. • Participate in collection maintenance activities, including weeding and shelf reading. • Attend appropriate meetings and workshops. |
Interns will have the opportunity to travel to branch libraries and the main library for other experiences.
Qualifications:
Library internships offer university students interested and skilled in library science, communications, education, and English opportunities to work alongside Information Professionals to serve the Leon County community. Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program during the internship. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES • Strong public service commitment • Excellent oral and written communication skills • Strong organizational skills • Ability to communicate effectively with patrons of all ages • Comfort with learning and using library technologies and digital tools PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Lift and carry bags and push carts filled with library materials weighing up to 50 pounds |

This is a temporary position anticipated to last 12 weeks, aligning with the academic summer semester. The person in this position will work approximately 12 hours per week. The schedule is otherwise flexible according to the successful candidate’s needs, with the expectation of varied hours. The internship will take place at the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library, located at 200 W. Park Ave., Tallahassee, FL, 32301. |

Internship dates: May 11 to August 1, 2026 Duration: 12 weeks (summer semester)
Benefits to the Volunteer:
This is an unpaid, in-person internship, requiring a minimum commitment of 12 hours per week. Students may earn academic credit while interning.
