Divine Revelations Ministries, Geeks & Gramps Program Assistant Youth  Coordinator

Divine Revelations Ministries, Inc. (DRMI) is a 501c3 charitable organization with a mission to help all people to live more enriching lives. We accomplish our mission by administering six core secular (non-religious) programs under our nonprofit umbrella, including the DRMI Geeks & Gramps (grandparents) Program (G&GP) evidence-driven Control the Fire! ©2015 Anger Management Program for adults and teens (CTF) and Reclaiming Freedom from Addictions & Substances Program ©2022 (RFAS) for adults at correctional facilities, Leon County Detention Center, and Leon County Probation. We also distribute food/clothing to the homeless and those in need; and sponsor free community awareness events. DRMI’s life-enrichment programs and wraparound services assist the most vulnerable in the Big Bend 8-County region of Florida. Programming is targeted to youth ages 8-18 and seniors, court-ordered clients, incarcerated and returning citizens and at-risk youth and adults.

Details about the DRMI Geeks & Gramps Program

Under the corporate umbrella of DRMI, the G&GP was created in 2019 to bridge the digital and generational divide between youth and seniors. The program is multi-generational and serves two main demographics – youth and seniors. Youth complete a 4-week workshop series including professional and interpersonal skills featuring community professionals, meaningful learning activities, and youth are introduced to the fields of STEAM as career options. Youth learn to embrace collaboration with other youth and seniors, address ageism and cultivate intergenerational relationships with older generations, while paying it forward through volunteerism. Youth have the capacity to learn soft and hard skills to be more successful in school and as productive members of the community in general. Youth are designated as: Navigators (ages 8-12), Demonstrators (ages 13-16) and Facilitators (ages 17-19).

The DRMI G&GP is the only program in the Big Bend area of Florida that partners youth 8-19 as SMEs to train/help seniors learn the stewardship of digital technology and cultivate intergenerational relationships with a goal of reducing feelings of isolation/loneliness. Since its inception in 2019, the program has served 61 youth who have completed 72 workshop sessions and 571 volunteer hours. We have served 288 seniors at demo events and two (2) seniors have volunteered for the Senior Moments series.

Facilitating workshops and/or identifying subject matter experts in different aspects of technology fields. Assisting with setting up site visits/field trips to various technology-oriented programs in the community such as robotics and engineering. Identifying interests of the youth, and collaborating with local resources, schools, and organizations that can assist them in learning more about STEAM fields. Coordinating with local senior centers and/or various community-based locations to host workshops facilitated by the youth. Traveling to community-based locations to set up/tear down equipment and materials for classes for seniors. Details about the DRMI Geeks & Gramps Program

Under the corporate umbrella of DRMI, the G&GP was created in 2019 to bridge the digital and generational divide between youth and seniors. Populations of seniors continue to increase as baby boomer reach retirement age. The Census Bureau 2020 population estimates, 54.1 million Americans are age 65+ with Florida ranking nationally as #2 in population of seniors. The program shows potential for keeping older adults engaged in life-long learning, social inclusion, cultivation of intergenerational relationships and development of leadership and work-readiness skills for youth.

Volunteer: Become a MathPal

MathPals:

The transition from middle school to high school is a critical time in a student’s life. Mentoring in middle school in the form of intervention can often decrease the number of students who drop out during that tough transition. For those students who dropped out, passing the End-of-Course exams was often the largest hurdle, in particular the Algebra 1 End-of-Course exam.

Only 27% of Leon County Schools’ 2013-2014 level one students passed the Algebra 1 End of Course Exam.

This year, to work to increase the Algebra I passing rate in Leon County, United Way of the Big Bend is implementing the MathPals program at two local middle schools. MathPals will match caring volunteers one-to-one with middle school students who are struggling with the Algebra 1 skills needed to pass the End-of-Course exams. The MathPals curriculum will encourage students to master the Algebra 1 skills through exploration of math in the real world, collaborative learning, and independent practice.

Become a MathPal and make a difference in our community:

Volunteers are matched one-to-one with a middle school student Volunteers choose the school or the day that best fits their schedule (Tuesday or Wednesday, 4:00-5:00pm) Volunteers report during the after school setting for one hour a week during the school year Volunteers utilize a mathematics curriculum created by LCS District that is tailored to students’ needs Volunteers receive training from UWBB,LCS District, and Big Brothers Big Sisters (includes Level II background and fingerprint screening)

Volunteer: Become A Reading Pal Today!

United Way of the Big Bend is changing this statistic. ReadingPals is continuing to work to improve the reading skills of students in Gadsden, Leon, and Madison Counties.

ReadingPals relies on hundreds of volunteers every year to read one-to-one with students who have been identified as struggling readers.

Mentors are matched one-to-one with students in kindergarten, first, or second grades

Mentors report during the after school setting for one hour a week during the school year

Mentors choose the school and the day that best fit their schedule

Mentors utilize a curriculum created by LCS District and UWBB that is tailored to children’s reading needs

Mentors present each student with a brand new book every week

Mentors receive training from UWBB and the school district (includes background screening)

For more information and to register to become a ReadingPals volunteer, please contact Rhonda Cooper at 850-487-8091 or rhonda@uwbb.org.

Getting Involved

Interested but aren’t sure you can give a full-time commitment? Here are other ways to get involved with ReadingPals:

Be an Alternate– A ReadingPals Alternate serves as a “substitute” when a full-time ReadingPal cannot be there to read with their student. Alternates have the flexibility to go when it fits in their schedule. Deliver books– Each week, ReadingPals students take home a brand new book. We need help getting the books from our office to the different ReadingPals sites. Put sponsor stickers on books– Each take-home book has a personal label that allows the student to write their name in their book, as well as see all the sponsors who make ReadingPals possible. Every book (last year alone we gave out over 3,000 books!) must have a sticker in it! This is a great opportunity for large groups/companies. Assemble holiday and special projects– During special times of the year, students receive small projects/kits as gifts for their hard work (i.e. holidays, end of the year, or just because). This is another great opportunity for large groups/companies.
