Volunteer: Disaster Preparedness

Before a disaster begins, the Red Cross Preparedness Teams work to educate and prepare our local communities to be educated, have proper supplies and identify resources in the local community that will help and support their families in times of Disaster.

Discuss how to prepare and respond to the types of emergencies that are most likely to happen where you live, learn, work and play.

Pillowcase Project: Save lives and prevent injury by providing leadership and/or support to Disaster Cycle Services team members through The Pillowcase Project. The Pillowcase Project is a national youth preparedness program offered by Red Cross regions across the country. The 40- or 60-minute presentation provides emergency preparedness education to youth in grades 3-5 (ages 8-11) in school classrooms and other settings.  Numerous tools have been developed for this program including a standardized curriculum, workbook, quizzes and activities which have been carefully constructed with the help of curriculum and hazard experts. Many tools for presenters have been developed to foster consistency and fidelity to the program goals and objectives. The highly interactive presentation addresses home fire safety, a local natural hazard, psycho-social coping skills and household preparedness steps like making a plan and a kit.

Volunteer: Board Members

Headline: Join the Board for Girls on the Run of the Big Bend! Description:   One girl put it this way, "I learned that I am the boss of my brain." This program is about helping girls take charge of their lives. You can also think of it as Can University — a place where girls learn that they can. No limits. No constraints. Only opportunities to be remarkable. That is Girls on the Run of the Big Bend.
The Girls on the Run program provides a safe and interactive way to learn about leading a fulfilling life with important topics such as goal-setting, cooperation, healthy decision-making, and self-respect.  The program also creatively integrates running, as the girls train for a celebratory 5K that takes place at the end of the program. The innovative curriculum teaches girls to listen and open up while also encouraging them to commit to a healthy lifestyle and to harness the inner strength that they possess. GOTR-BB is currently in five local elementary schools, but the program seeks to expand across the Big Bend to bring this valuable program to even more girls in our area.  Requirements:   A Girls on the Run of the Big Bend board member must possess a passion for and commitment to improving the lives and opportunities for girls in third through eighth grades. Board members serve two-year terms and should regularly attend board meetings. Board members should also make a serious commitment to participate actively in the Board's work. Subcommittees include Program/Girl Engagement, Celebratory 5K, and Fundraising. Board members are also expected to make an annual contribution of $250 each. As GOTR-BB grows, representation of the diversity of our community is highly valued. Volunteer: Volunteer Camp Hosts

The Apalachicola National Forest is seeking applicants for volunteer camp hosts at various recreation sites throughout the forest, including Silver Lake, Wright Lake, Camel Lake and Fort Gadsden. Campground hosts play a key role in supporting forest activities and projecting a friendly, helpful face to visitors.

Volunteers that support our campgrounds receive a free site that includes full hookups (camping space, electric, water, and sewer), propane reimbursement and tools needed for the job, in exchange for 30 hours of service per week. Camp hosts on the Apalachicola National Forest are unpaid volunteer positions. The time requirement may be divided up when there is more than one individual occupying the host site.

Some of the duties that camp hosts are required to perform include welcoming visitors and providing them with information about the forest, performing general site maintenance and assisting Forest Service personnel.

Volunteers of all ages can apply for positions and individuals under 18 years old may volunteer with signed permission from a parent or guardian. The Apalachicola offers diverse projects and a chance for an individual or group to become involved in meeting visitors, working in a natural setting and learning about the forest.

Groups are welcome to help with individual projects such as trail maintenance, forest cleanups, recreation area projects and various other activities.

The Apalachicola National Forest, at 571,088 acres, is within short driving distance from Apalachicola, the beaches at Carrabelle and St. George Island.  Outdoor recreational activities are centered on campgrounds, lakefront beaches, hiking, fishing, boating and OHV and equestrian trails.  Other attractions include the Florida National Scenic Trail and Bradwell Bay Wilderness.
