Through our AmeriCorps ‘Legacy Corps for Veterans and Military Families’ (LCVMF) program, we have the unique opportunity to serve veterans and military family members impacted by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. LCVMF is a project that provides caregiver support services for veterans and military families. It was developed to meet the need for alternative respite care strategies specifically for veteran and military caregivers. The goal in providing caregiver respite is to keep families in their communities longer, postponing or avoiding institutional care completely.
AmeriCorps member volunteers are needed to provide weekly in-home respite care and support to individuals with dementia so their caregivers can take a break. Once trained by AmeriCorps and in dementia care, member volunteers provide in-home non-medical care, companionship, and a variety of activities for persons with Alzheimer’s and related dementias. Member volunteers commit to a year of AmeriCorps service, and they receive a monthly living allowance, student loan forbearance with paid interest, and an educational scholarship upon successful completion of the program.

Eligibility:
- Must be 18+ and a US citizen, National or Legal Resident
- 1-year commitment of 450 hours (about 20% will be training hours)
- Pass a 2 background screenings and National Sex Offender check
- Must have reliable transportation, proof of insurance, and a personal cell phone.
