Volunteer: Longer Community Service Shifts - 8:30am-1:30pLooking to earn community service hours or spend time in a peaceful, hands-on environment? Join us for a general volunteer shift and help support the daily work that keeps our farm running. Whether you’re here for the goats, the fresh air, or to give back, we’re glad to have you. What You’ll Be Doing This shift includes a variety of important farm tasks, depending on the day. You might help clean barns, groom goats, assist with repairs, tidy outdoor areas, or take on other projects that keep the farm healthy and running smoothly. It’s real work, think of it as a free outdoor workout with goats. Volunteer Hours Shift runs from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM Need extra hours? This shift is longer than our normal morning chores. If severe weather shortens your shift after you’ve arrived and checked in or we finish early, we will still credit you for the full scheduled time. Court-Mandated Service We are approved for court-mandated community service hours and provide signed verification of completed time for the court or your legal representative. Important Info Bring a refillable water bottle and wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. If you arrive and don’t see anyone, come through the large red gate by the parking area and check in. if you don't see us there call 850-666-4714. Volunteers under 13 years old must have a parent remain on the property during the shift. We volunteer rain or shine unless conditions are unsafe. Group Sign-Ups We have paused formal group bookings because group reservations were filling available spots and not consistently showing up. If you are coming with others, you are still welcome. Please sign up for one person and leave a note with the total number in your group so we can plan accordingly. Attendance Policy: Please Read Carefully We rely heavily on volunteers to complete essential farm work. When someone does not show up, animals still need care and other volunteers must carry the extra load. Cancel at least 18 hours in advance if you cannot attend. Last-minute cancellations count as no-shows. If you do not show up without proper notice, we will remove any remaining shifts from your account and you will not be able to volunteer here again. For court-mandated volunteers: we report attendance to the courts, and a no-show will be reflected in your record accordingly. We appreciate volunteers who are dependable and ready to work. Your time truly makes a difference here. Come prepared to help, learn something new, and maybe make a few goat friends along the way. Like nationally, there remains a notable generational and digital divide between youth and seniors in our local areas. The program is a multi-generational and serves two main demographics – youth and seniors. The goals of the program are to (1) empower seniors to stay connected with loved ones and remain engaged with their community in an effort to combat feelings of isolation and loneliness; (2) bridge the digital divide by helping seniors learn digital literacy and stewardship through group and one-on-one personalized coaching from youth; and (3) bridge the generational divide by connecting generations through technology while providing meaningful volunteer experiences for youth ages 8-18 and older adults. The program shows potential for keeping older adults engaged in life-long learning, social inclusion, cultivation of intergenerational relationships and development of leadership and work-readiness skills for youth.

Volunteer: Become a MathPal
MathPals: The transition from middle school to high school is a critical time in a student’s life. Mentoring in middle school in the form of intervention can often decrease the number of students who drop out during that tough transition. For those students who dropped out, passing the End-of-Course exams was often the largest hurdle, in particular the Algebra 1 End-of-Course exam.
Only 27% of Leon County Schools’ 2013-2014 level one students passed the Algebra 1 End of Course Exam.
This year, to work to increase the Algebra I passing rate in Leon County, United Way of the Big Bend is implementing the MathPals program at two local middle schools. MathPals will match caring volunteers one-to-one with middle school students who are struggling with the Algebra 1 skills needed to pass the End-of-Course exams. The MathPals curriculum will encourage students to master the Algebra 1 skills through exploration of math in the real world, collaborative learning, and independent practice.
Become a MathPal and make a difference in our community: Volunteers are matched one-to-one with a middle school student Volunteers choose the school or the day that best fits their schedule (Tuesday or Wednesday, 4:00-5:00pm) Volunteers report during the after school setting for one hour a week during the school year Volunteers utilize a mathematics curriculum created by LCS District that is tailored to students’ needs Volunteers receive training from UWBB,LCS District, and Big Brothers Big Sisters (includes Level II background and fingerprint screening)

Volunteer: Become A Reading Pal Today!United Way of the Big Bend is changing this statistic. ReadingPals is continuing to work to improve the reading skills of students in Gadsden, Leon, and Madison Counties.
ReadingPals relies on hundreds of volunteers every year to read one-to-one with students who have been identified as struggling readers. Mentors are matched one-to-one with students in kindergarten, first, or second grades Mentors report during the after school setting for one hour a week during the school year Mentors choose the school and the day that best fit their schedule Mentors utilize a curriculum created by LCS District and UWBB that is tailored to children’s reading needs Mentors present each student with a brand new book every week Mentors receive training from UWBB and the school district (includes background screening)
For more information and to register to become a ReadingPals volunteer, please contact Rhonda Cooper at 850-487-8091 or rhonda@uwbb.org.
Getting Involved Interested but aren’t sure you can give a full-time commitment? Here are other ways to get involved with ReadingPals: Be an Alternate– A ReadingPals Alternate serves as a “substitute” when a full-time ReadingPal cannot be there to read with their student. Alternates have the flexibility to go when it fits in their schedule. Deliver books– Each week, ReadingPals students take home a brand new book. We need help getting the books from our office to the different ReadingPals sites. Put sponsor stickers on books– Each take-home book has a personal label that allows the student to write their name in their book, as well as see all the sponsors who make ReadingPals possible. Every book (last year alone we gave out over 3,000 books!) must have a sticker in it! This is a great opportunity for large groups/companies. Assemble holiday and special projects– During special times of the year, students receive small projects/kits as gifts for their hard work (i.e. holidays, end of the year, or just because). This is another great opportunity for large groups/companies.
